Laser Surveys
Road Info operates three 2 Laser Profilers. Our equipment is calibrated to meet the operational guidelines set down by the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) with respect to operation of road roughness measuring equipment. Laser surveys will be conducted in accordance with the latest revision of Transfund's Road Condition Roughness Manual.
To survey any road with the laser profilometer the road needs to be sealed, or ready for sealing, and free of surface water.
At the commencement of the survey a representative site of approximately one kilometre shall be surveyed and the results processed. The unit will be checked at daily intervals for both distance and roughness counts. Should the resultant figures vary by more than 3% standard deviation from the original run then the cause of the deviation shall be ascertained and corrective action taken. Results of the above runs are reported to the client as part of the quality assurance report at the conclusion of the survey.
Pre-survey checks including still and bounce tests are performed daily. This ensures that each laser and accelerometer is performing in the correct manner prior to survey commencement.
During the survey our operators ensure that the equipment is functioning normally by monitoring the sound of the lasers and by viewing the computer readouts.
The quality of the accumulated data is checked on a regular basis using a data integrity program which looks for anomalies in the raw data. This alerts the operators to any potential problems of data quality and enables us to retest as soon as practical. The verification process will also allow our experienced operators to be certain that all roads necessary have been surveyed in full before leaving the district.
Our office staff then completes the processing by using our specifically developed in-house software to fit the data into the RAMM data base, which can be uploaded electronically to CJN Technology’s hosting service.
Finally a written report is forwarded to the roading engineer/ project manager stating:
- The number of rows uploaded,
- The number of kilometres surveyed,
- Specific operator notes per road surveyed,
